About the course

In this course, we’ll focus on foundational skills that are essential for learning—but often missing from the curriculum: metacognition, emotion regulation, and executive functioning. Although rarely found within the academic standards, these are the skills that are most central to students’ ability to engage, persist, and grow. These are the keys to becoming a self-directed, lifelong learner. We’ll explore the most high-impact strategies for teaching these critical skills and how to flip the script—embedding these strategies within content instruction. Together, we’ll learn how to: 🧠 Teach metacognitive strategies that help students reflect, self-monitor, and adjust as learners 🧘‍♀️ Introduce emotion regulation skills—both acceptance and change strategies—to help students navigate big emotions and stay engaged 📅 Support executive functioning through predictable routines and scaffolds that promote independence 🔄 Reframe lessons to intentionally center these skills, not as extras, but as entry points for learning 🏫 Create classroom environments that make these skills visible, teachable, and accessible for all students
